Is Your Deck in Need of Re-staining? Watch for These 7 Signs!

Wood decks are a great addition to any home or cabin but require maintenance to stay in top shape. Re-staining is an important part of that maintenance, but knowing when it’s time can be difficult. Here are seven signs that will let you know it’s time to re-stain the wood materials on your deck.

1. Faded Color

Over time, exposure to the sun and weather related elements can cause the wood to lose its vibrant color and become dull and faded. This not only detracts from the overall appearance of your deck but can also indicate that the wood is more susceptible to damage and rot. Re-staining the wood can help restore the deck’s color and provide protection against future damage.

2. Water Doesn’t Bead Up on the Surface

This clearly indicates that the previous stain’s protective layer has worn off, leaving the wood vulnerable to moisture damage. Water can penetrate the wood without proper protection, causing warping, splitting, and rotting.

3. Wood Feels Rough or Has Splinters

If you feel that the wood on your deck is rough or has splintered, it’s a sign that the protective layer of stain has worn off. The wood is now exposed to the elements and will start to absorb moisture, which can lead to swelling, warping, and eventually rotting. Rough wood can also be uncomfortable to walk on, making spending time on your deck less enjoyable.

4. Mildew or Mold Growth

Mildew or mold growth is a common problem on wood decks, especially in damp or shaded areas. It can appear as black or green spots or patches, look unsightly, and be a health hazard. Mildew and mold can weaken the wood, making it more susceptible to damage, and can also cause the surface to become slippery when wet.

5. Peeling or Cracking of the Old Stain

This occurs when the old stain has worn down due to exposure to sunlight, moisture, and foot traffic. The peeling or cracking of the old stain can expose the wood to damage further, so it’s essential to restain the deck as soon as possible to prevent it from deteriorating further.

6. Stains or Discolorations on the Wood

These may include dark spots, black marks, or other unsightly blemishes. In some cases, these stains may be superficial and can be removed with a thorough cleaning. However, if the stains are deeply embedded in the wood, it may be necessary to restain the deck to restore its appearance.

7. Increased Frequency of Cleaning and Maintenance

This means that you may find yourself cleaning your deck more often than usual and that the deck only stays clean for a short time. This is a sign that the wood is becoming more porous and absorbing more dirt and grime, indicating that it’s time to re-stain the wood to protect it from further damage.

Wood decks greatly enhance any cabin, providing an ideal space to entertain and relax at home. By closely monitoring the condition of your wood deck, you’ll be able to schedule re-staining as soon as it’s required, reducing the risk of further damage and making it easier to maintain your deck.
