Custom Built Cabin

Custom Cabins-What’s your Style?

When it comes to custom cabins, there are many different styles to consider. One important aspect to think about is lifestyle. How do you envision you and your family and friends occupying the space?   A common thread in just about every build or remodel is that purpose effects style.  There are many other factors that come into play as well such as (property geography, budget, etc.). Consequently, when it comes to the end result, the cabin should successfully fulfill the purpose for which it was built or remodeled.

A few of the most common styles we see are the Chalet, Mono Roof and Wing & Wing.  Each style lending itself to a somewhat specific purpose.

Custom Cabin Style: Chalet

Custom Cabin Style: Chalet

This custom cabin style is most commonly used by the those who look to the cabin as a getaway and a special place for the occasional big gatherings.  The floor plans have larger common areas and the bedrooms are for function rather than form.  Windows and views are what many people are after with this style, and great room walls with lots of glass are desired.  The emphasis is on social spaces (kitchen, family rooms, decks & porches).  If the lot allows for it, extra bedrooms are in the walk out basement.  Variations with second floors also allow for more bedrooms but again, most of the real estate is used for common areas.

Mono roofs have lately been gaining popularity.  Most are modest in size, but can be larger.  This custom cabin style seems to be most popular with couples or smaller families who just want to enjoy the day on their own or get away from the pace and the race. Using tall wall engineering on the glass walls to accommodate Wisconsin winter snow, they still offer great views but with a nice cozy cabin feel.  Spaces are simple and efficient with a sharp architectural feel.

Custom Cabin Style: Wing to Wing

The Wing & Wing, as we call it, is a modified version of the chalet. This style offers open common spaces but also provides some ability for privacy when more guest are up. This custom cabin style seems most popular with those who occupy it full time. The cabin style also serves the purpose as the destination point for extended family on the holidays or big gatherings.   One of the wings can be used as the quieter “bedroom” in the form of multiple main level bedrooms. It can also be used as a master suite for the owners.  The other wing is commonly a large kitchen/island/dining space. This is very popular as it lends itself to larger gathering around the center island for entertaining.

In Conclusion

So when you start thinking about building a custom cabin, consider your cabin style preference. When you consider purpose along with budget and appearance, the result will likely be the cabin of your dreams. In the end, when your cabin does a good job of the lifestyle you give it, you will feel your investment was well worth it.
