Four Fun Winter Activities to do at the Cabin

Okay, so you cannot fish off the dock or jump in the lake, there are still many other fun things to do at the cabin during the long winter months  Here are four fun winter activities that will allow you to enjoy the woods and the lake and also some ideas to stay fit and avoid the winter flab.

  1. Snowmobile-Over 300 miles of trails winding through wooded and open areas provide ample snowmobiling opportunities in Burnett County. This trail system connects to all surrounding counties, including Pine County, Minnesota.

From December 1 through March 31, you may operate your snowmobile on state-funded winter trails when a 4-inch groomed snow base is present and trails have been officially opened. Snowmobile trails are marked with orange blazers. Please refer to Trails and Licensing for maps and regulations. Go to Trail Updates for current conditions and to sign up for email or text notifications. Get updates here: https://www.burnettcountywi.gov/139/Snowmobile-Trails

  1. Ice fish-https: There is something calming about ice fishing on the lake, Weather you are roughing it out in the cold and sitting in a wan fish shack ice fishing can be relaxing as much as it is exciting. 1. Snowshoeing-What better way to see the beautiful woods and get exercise than to go snow shoeing straight through the forest. You would not want to get lost in the woods in the cold of winter. Snowshoeing not only helps you maintain your fitness through the winter, but can often even improve it. The sport is accessible, has a relatively short learning curve and doesn’t require a big investment in equipment, unlike other winter activities like skiing. Note: You might want to bring a compass or GPS device.

Ice Yachting-or Ice Sailing.

Ice yachting (or Ice Sailing) is a type of sailing sport, where sail boats called ice yachts (or iceboats) are used to race on frozen lakes and rivers. The sport is high-speed in nature, where the average is about 72 mph, and high winds boats reaching speeds of up to 90 miles. The sport originated on the Hudson River in the United States. The sport is currently very popular in the United States and Canada, and to some extent in the Netherlands and Finland. Ice yachts are about 40 ft long, where the entire boat rests on a single piece runner plank with runners, and a rudder. The runners and the rudder are made of soft cast iron. There are four different classifications of ice yachts based on the canvas used for the sails. They are, 300 sq ft and below, 300 to 450 sq ft, 450 to 600 sq ft, and 600 sq ft or more. Ice Sailing A typical ice yachting course is about 15 to 20 miles long with several turns. Each boat will have a crew of six or seven members, who line themselves on the runner plank based on the wind to balance the boat. Most courses are triangular in shape where each side is a mile long, and at least two directions are windward. Many competitions are conducted on the Great Lakes in the United States, where several clubs compete. This sport is a favorite pass time for Scott, GM of Tice Construction. You can catch him and his son Justin, hitting the ice on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon.
